In Our Own Voice Presenter Job Description:
Job Purpose
“In Our Own Voice” is a unique public education program developed by NAMI, in which two trained consumer speakers share compelling and personal testimonies of living with and overcoming the challenges posed by mental illness. Audience participation and discussion are encouraged, and a brief video with a variety of stories accompanies the presentation. IOOV presentations are given to consumer groups, students, law enforcement officials, educators, providers, faith community members, politicians, professionals, inmates, interested civic groups and many other organizations and corporations.
The goals of IOOV are to meet the need for consumer-run initiatives, to set a standard for quality education about mental illness from those who have been there, to focus on recovery and the message of hope.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
The IOOV Presenter performs a wide range of duties including but not limited to the following:
- 6 to 8 hours of online training to become certified.
- 1 Day of in-person IOOV state training
- Communicates with IOOV Coordinator about presentations
- Adheres to NAMI Signature Program Code of Conduct
- Arrives at presentations early and follows policies and procedures outlined in the manual
Essential Job Functions
- Being able to speak to small and large groups of people
- Presenters must be available to do one presentation a month minimum
- Presenters shall strictly use the IOOV program format
- Being a representative of NAMI
- Being able to run a DVD player and or USB on laptop
- Be able to speak to a variety of audiences
- Be able to get yourself to different presentations within Santa Clara County
Qualifications
Education
- Completed Peer to Peer Recover Education Course
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- A knowledge of NAMI programs including Peer-to-Peer.
- Knowledge of mental health programs and resources in the area
- Strong oral communication skills
- Comfortable speaking to large groups
- Ability to work closely and communicate effectively with others
Proficiency in the use of computers for:
- Internet
Personal characteristics:
The IOOV Presenter should demonstrate competence in some or all of the following:
- Build Relationships: Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the program
- Communicate Effectively: Speak and listen using effective communication tools and techniques
- Foster Teamwork: Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance program effectiveness.
- Lead: Positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the program
- Make Decisions: Assess situations to determine the importance, urgency and risks, and make clear decisions which are timely and in the best interests of the program
Job Details:
- $21.00 per hour, Presenters are paid for 2 hours per presentation
- Employee will be reimbursed for mileage
