Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress in every society, in every family. — Kofi Annan
NAMI-Santa Clara County offers FREE education programs designed to empower individuals living with mental illness and their families. These classes are led by NAMI-trained teachers who have their own life experience with mental illness. Our programs are offered throughout the year.
On February 11, 2025, our general meeting will feature two NAMI signature programs — NAMI Peer-to-Peer and NAMI Family-to-Family. NAMI Peer-to-Peer is a free 9-week education program for individuals living with mental health conditions, and NAMI Family-to-Family is a free 9-week class for family members supporting a loved one with a mental health condition.
You will hear from the program coordinators Barbara Thompson (Peer-to-Peer) and Adela Arce (Family-to-Family). Learn how to enroll in these programs, find out what the curriculum covers and what to expect at these classes from participants who have taken them. This is a great opportunity to talk with the class coordinators and find answers to your questions about NAMI education programs.
Our Presenters:
Adela Arce: When mental illness affected her loved one, Adela Arce knew it was crucial that she seek to educate herself to be able to navigate the challenges and find effective ways to be of support to her family member. Adela attended her first Family–to–Family class in 2017, and soon after, signed up to volunteer as a resource assistant for the same course. The Family-to-Family program gave her the tools she needed. Adela has since become NAMI-SCC’s Education Manager, overseeing “Ending the Silence”; “In Our Own Voice”; “Family Support Groups”; and “NAMI Basics” and “Family-to-Family” education classes.
Barbara Thompson: In her role as Peer-to-Peer Coordinator, Barbara Thompson and her team are responsible for organizing, supervising, and mentoring the Peer-to-Peer Recovery Education classes. She strives to provide people with mental health challenges access to services and empowers them to manage their illnesses. Barbara has a BA in Psychology from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
