The DIR Health and Wellness Program, Disability Advisory Committee, and Human Resources’ Employee Assistance Program are pleased to announce an educational session on mental illness in the workplace during Mental Illness Awareness Week. Kathy Forward and Dawn Brown of NAMI will speak about how to recognize mental illness in the workplace and enable employees with mental illness to contribute valuable skills and energy to our collective project of public service. This is a brown bag event – bring your lunch. The speakers will take questions until 2pm. Signing in will not be required.
The session will contain valuable information for coworkers, supervisors, and managers, including the following topics:
- Dispelling myths about mental illness to overcome stigma
- Practical information about major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other mental illnesses
- Understanding the needs of employees with mental illness
- Common obstacles to getting hired and retaining work for current and potential employees living with mental illness and how to proactively eliminate those obstacles
Kathy Forward is the Executive Director of NAMI, Santa Clara County, an affiliate of NAMI California and the national organization.
She along with Dawn Brown, educate healthcare workers, families, and faith leaders across the Bay Area.
